Banana bananer.

I bought a bunch of bananas on Sunday. I tried to pick them strategically: one bunch of almost ripe ones, and one bunch of not-so-ripe ones.

Well, none of the bunches are ripe. And I’m sitting here giving them the eagle eye, because clearly the energy contained within my laserbeam eyes is enough to ripen these bananas.

(I’ll circumvent the inevitable comment about putting them in a paper bag by saying that yes, bananas ripen faster if you put them in a sealed paper bag. The porous paper bag still allows them to vent – that is, not rot – but still traps the ethylene that is emitted. Ethylene makes bananas ripen. Ergo, trapping the bananas in ethylene makes bananas ripen faster.)

However. I choose to stare at bananas in a bowl, rather than at a paper bag with bananas in it.

What will inevitably happen is that they’ll reach optimum ripeness, but by this point I’ll have grown bored of my little game. I’ll discover the bananas when they’re just past the stage that I’ll eat them, at which point I’ll refuse to eat them. Instead, I’ll let them proceed on their merry way to spotted, mushy banana-for-banana-bread territory.

Oil of oregano and other miracle cures

I’ve been hit with the mother of colds this week. Sick enough to miss last night’s Northern Voice kick-off dinner. But certainly not sick enough to miss Northern Voice!

No fewer than three people told me to get some oil of oregano. Oil of oregano, I said? I’ve never even heard of the stuff.

You put a few drops under your tongue, and then chase it down with orange juice. It lights a fire under your tongue, and kind of feels like you’ve swallowed lighter fluid. Pleasant feeling. Many thanks to Nancy for suggesting the fruity chaser.

I think it’s kind of like Buckley’s. It’s so god-awful that your body gets its act together and makes you healthy again. I’ll let you know when I feel better.

Happy birthday, Elisa!

It’s Elisa’s birthday today, and I’m such a crappy friend that I didn’t have time to make her birthday pie.

That’s right, birthday pie. A few years ago, I stopped giving birthday gifts and started giving people birthday pie.

Think about it. Birthdays? Awesome. Pie? Fabulous. Birthday pie? OMG, that’s amazingly, spectacularly delicious.

Elisa, I’ll make it up to you on pi(e) day. That’s March 14, kids. Bonus points if you can tell me why that’s pi(e) day.

Lazy Sundays

I spent yesterday cooking dinner for 80 people. That’s right, 80. It was a fundraiser for the Nightingale School Breakfast Program, which provides breakfast to inner city kids.

Dinners like this are tricky. Even in hotels or restaurants, you need to have good people and a workflow to make things go smoothly. When you have one day and a handful of keen volunteers with varying levels of culinary and hospitality experience, it can be tricky to pull off.

It went well. But at the end of the day, I realized that it was a 14-hour shift and that my feet and back were killing me. How in the hell did I manage to do this before? I must be getting old.

Three cheers for brunch!

I love brunch. Actually, I love breakfast but I’m rarely able to enjoy breakfast. And on the weekends, I love to sleep in – which means that breakfast becomes brunch.

Anyway, I’m having my two oldest friends over for brunch today. By oldest, I mean that I’ve known one girl my entire life, and the other since I was eight. We don’t see each other nearly often enough these days, so I’m looking forward to seeing them.

I’m making French toast with boozy bananas (dark rum or orange liqueur? I can’t decide) and honey-glazed bacon. We’ll finish with lime-ginger sorbet, and wash everything down with mimosas.

The combination of good friends, food and stories – it’s going to be fabulous.
