My dad loves hamburgers

My dad makes me smile. He appears to be the most unemotional man on the face of the planet, but I’ve learned how to read him.

My mom doesn’t eat beef. Never has, never will. And while she claims that it’s okay if you cook it in her house, I’ve never tried. I suspect that there would be much fussing if I did.

So, when my dad and I get together without my mom, we eat beef. And there are few things that make me smile more than when my dad calls to say, “hi, just thinking of you. Wondering if you want to go for burgers this week.”

Dine Out Vancouver: db Bistro Moderne, take two.

Yesterday’s post was about my first, and rather disappointing, visit to db Bistro Moderne. Today’s post is about my second, and rather enjoyable, visit to the same restaurant.

Right off the bat, I noticed that the service was better. This is probably because we had a late table on a Wednesday night, and the restaurant wasn’t nearly as busy as it had been on Saturday. We were seated in an alcove away from the rest of the restaurant, which afforded a little bit of privacy.

Dine Out Vancouver: Parkside

I’ve been meaning to go to Parkside for a while, going so far as to make it one of my new year’s resolutions. Well, I took advantage of Dine Out Vancouver to cross this one off my list – and it was so good, I’m hoping to cross it off more than once.

Ottawa: city of pho

I used to live in Canada’s capital city, Ottawa. It’s a pretty standard government city: lots of civil servants, lots of pretty buildings, and not much to do. Having said that, I loved living in Ottawa. I lived within a 20-45 minute walk of anything worth doing, but it was big enough that I could still get most things that I wanted.

However, I didn’t find a single decent Chinese restaurant in Ottawa. And, for a Chinese-Canadian from Vancouver, this is a tragedy of huge proportion.

What Ottawa lacked in Chinese food, it makes up for in Vietnamese food. Somerset Street runs through Chinatown (all five blocks of it, that is) and the whole street is peppered with places called Pho Bo, Pho Bo 2, New Pho Bo, Pho Bo Ga, New Pho Bo Ga, and my favourite, Pho Bo Ga LA.

Art, wine and roast beef

Through the magic of Twitter, I found out about an art opening last night at the old a&b sound location on Seymour Street. It was strange to be in there, with art and video installations where there used to be CDs and posters. (Well, there was a single Jully Black poster on one wall, but we’ll ignore that.) The show featured works by Michael Morris, Paul Wong, Atilla R. Lukacs, and Ignacio Corral. Throw in some wine and food, and you have the perfect antidote to a rainy Tuesday night.
